Writing Toolkit

These tools are used to support students with physical disabilities that limit their ability to write and mental or learning disabilities that make organization and writing conventions more difficult for students to implement. These tools may help students overcome challenges like communication disorders, physical disabilities, and learning disabilities. The tools include: • Process Organizer – A graphic organizer with step-by-step instructions (“Plan” “Write” “Check”) for six different types of writing categories (Explanation, Report, Discussion, Persuasive Text, Recount, Instructional Text). • Noun-Verb Match Up – A sectioned spiral flash card set split into nouns and verbs to help brainstorm sentences and different combinations of words. • Dry Erase Writing Wedge – A wedge (makes it easier to handwrite because of the angle) that has a plastic cover sheet attached so that a student can write on any worksheet (when under the cover) and erase and fix mistakes fairly easy. I can see this being used for repeated no mess practice on a specific test e.g. spelling words, problem solving, and grammar lessons. • Portable keyboard – I can see students carrying around this keyboard with a reader board to either communicate with others or to save notes instead of handwriting them. • Grips – rubber or foam grips to attach to pencils • Big Pen – Larger than a typical pen. Another tool I would add is a recorder pen. This pen allows a student to record audio while writing on a special paper and will play back the audio when you touch a specific diagram or area of your handwriting. I would also add a Powerout Graphic Organizer. This organizer is a clear structured way to organize an essay and by being blank, students can write directly in the boxes for Thesis, Details and Conclusion.
